Neighborhoods: Bronx Eats

  • Title-Bronk-Eats-1
  • The borough of Bronx in New York City has a population of 1.4 million. 1 in 4 residents is food insecure. That's about 350,000 adults and children (Food Metric Report 2019, City of New York). Food Insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Bronx is unfortunately the hungriest borough.
  • Bronx Eats, a program created by Gail Schorsch, provides education and resources for preparation of balanced meals at home, going over the basics of shopping for seasonal produce, as well as fundamental cooking and safety skills.
  • NYC has many people in need of basic food, while access to fruits, vegetables - healthy food - is extremely limited with not enough programs addressing the issue.

  • Residents from all over the borough attend Gail’s classes, including students, immigrants and even pantry cooks.

  • By collaborating with Lehman College and other programs such as NYC’s Department of Youth & Community Development and Green City Force, Bronx Eats is educating people on how to eat healthier, even on a tight budget.
  • Participants of NYC’s Department of Youth & Community Development and Green City Force listen to Gail as she introduces the day's recipe.

  • Gail hopes NYC, as well as other cities, recognize the importance of contributing towards the most essential needs of human beings, via supporting similar programs.
  • Participants learn the essential skills in a fun environment. One participant said she hadn't tried an eggplant dish before and was keen on finding out about more recipes. Another particiant was ecstatic that her family just couldn't stop eating the sweet potato fries she learned to cook at Bronx Eats.
